Are YOU a “YES!!” Girl Bombshell?
Author: Gigi01.12.2011
Hello Bombshells and Happy New Year!!
Are YOU a “YES!!” girl?
My definition of a “YES!” girl might not be what you are thinking. I am not referring to the phenomenon of saying yes when you’d rather say no, saying yes when you don’t have time or inclination, or saying yes when you have no intention of following through. All those are very non-Bombshell yeses, and many women spend their entire lives caught up in that sad game. Let’s change that!
I would love to share the day that I became a forever “YES!!” girl. About 6 years ago a friend called me and asked me to help out at the soup kitchen where I live because they were very short-handed. My first response in my mind was “Absolutely not…I can’t cook, what if they are dirty and I have a little OCD about that, and I don’t like laziness so I probably would be tortured if I did that.” But there was also another voice inside of me…the one that is full of compassion and love for people and the human condition…the one that loves to know another’s “story” and the one that loves to encourage others…so I asked my girlfriend if I could do a trial run to see if it was a fit for me, and she agreed. That day my life changed in ways that still surprise me.
I went to the soup kitchen that evening. (I didn’t have to cook, thank you God~ and the guests there thank Him too!!) My job for the night was to love on the people as they arrived, serve the food, and help with cleanup. I felt a little hesitant about the “love on the people” thing…although I SO love people, remember the OCD thing I have about dirt? But I pulled myself up by the bootstraps and gave it 1000%. And guess what? I was in HEAVEN. Yes, HEAVEN. The guests there were not much different than you or I in many ways. They all had a story about why they were at this place in life as do you and I. They had families and all that comes with that, just like us. They had dreams that weren’t met and goals that were. What they didn’t have that you and I do is a safe and warm place to eat every night. And that is why they were there…and that is why I was there. How simple really…to provide a lovely meal in a clean and warm place and love on them and feed them without judgment. What better blessing is there than that?
Six years later, I still volunteer at the soup kitchen several evenings a month. And guess what dear Bombshell? I love it as much as I ever did. We have “regulars” that we know by name and it is very cool to see them and hug them and love them…and yes, some are dirty. And some have made choices that got them there. But they are ALL human beings worthy of love and a hot meal. As my gratitude has grown, my love for those less fortunate has also grown. Several of my best girlfriends have also joined the fun and it is one of the highlights of our time together! Like I always say to people that ask about volunteering there, it really is way too much fun, so plan on that!
Back to YOU Bombshell. Where can you step up your “YES!!” ? Where are you not fully showing up in the world? Are you ready to change that today?
Some suggestions for you to take your Bombshell fabulosity up a notch:
1. Give away the fabulous clothes you no longer wear. Read my earlier posts about how to do that!
2. Serve at your local women’s shelter, soup kitchen, dog pound, or someplace that will make your heart sing every time you think about it. YOU are needed there!!
3. If time is a critical factor and you’ve told yourself you don’t have any, then give money. Everyone has different ways of serving so pick the one that is right for you. About this one~the girls (and guys) that serve with me are some of the busiest people I know and choose not to make the lack of time an excuse. Food for thought Bombshell!
So, how are you going to bless the world with your fabulosity? I can’t wait to hear!!

What fantastic ideas and so important this time of the year, Gigi~! I was reminded of “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” BY Ernest Hemingway. I just found a link to the short story!
